Living in Morocco
Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco (in Arabic: المملكة المغربية), is a country in northwest Africa forming part of the Maghreb. Its capital is Rabat. To the west, Morocco is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. To the north, by Spain, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Mediterranean Sea. To the east and south, by Algeria. And to the southwest, beyond the Moroccan Sahara, by Mauritania.
Morocco is governed by a constitutional monarchy, with King Mohammed VI as its current monarch. It is a member of several organizations, including the Arab Maghreb Union, the African Union, the International Organization of La Francophonie and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. In 1987, Morocco was granted “advanced status” with the EU. On May 15, 2009, the country joined the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe. And in June 2004, the President of the United States designated Morocco a Major Non-NATO Ally in recognition of the countries’ close ties and Morocco's steadfast support for the war on terrorism.
Two major diplomatic successes for the kingdom:
In January 2017, Morocco rejoined the African Union. On June 5 and 6 of the same year, the country signed the agreement in principle to join the Economic Community of West African States at the 51st ECOWAS summit in Monrovia.
